LADIES’ GARDENING CLUB. f Atrociously inclement weather on Monday afternoon interfered with the attendance at the meeting of the Ladies’ Gardening Club, at the Masonic Temple. There were 45 members present, however, and a pleasant afternoon was spent. Mrs J. H. Nicholls presided.
The business lor which a special general meeting had been called was first proceeded with. The secretaiy outlined the negotiations of the committee in connection with the proposed beautificsition, in conjunction with the Railway Department, of the railway station approach. It was hoped that a detailed plan, which was in the hands of the Railway Department, giving the exact number and position of trees to be supplied by the club would be ready for the meeting, but unfortunately this plan had not come to hand. ' On the proposal of Mrs Harmon. Smith, it was decided that the several sums of money which had been earmarked for town beautification at different times, should be utilised for this scheme for the planting of the railway station approach, subject to satisfactory arrangements being finalised by the committee and the Railway Department.
A report having been received from the committee of the Whangarei Primary School that trees should be provided, for planting in the school grounds, it was decided to donate 14 trees.
Mr A. C. Pye was to have been the lecturer, but, owing to floods interrupting railway services,' he was not able to get beyond Kaipara Flats. A reading was substituted. Afternoon tea contributed towards an enjoyable and successful meeting.
