CHARITY OF SPEECH. ‘ At St. Mary’s Cathedr'al, Sydney, on a recent Sunday evening, the Administrator, the Rev. Father Walter J. Hurley, said that the Scribes were the recognised teachers and expounders of the Old Law, and were looked to for guidance. The Pharisees made it their objective to observe the outward details of the law, especially in small matters, in order to gain the respect of the people. They prayed frequently, fasted, and gave alms, yet Christ openly and vehemently denounced them as unworthy to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ’s reason for this denunciation was that, while the Scribes and the Pharisees observed the outward appearances of, religion to appear virtuous, they neg-1 lected the weightier things of the j law. Many people at present observed the laws of the Church and State. Inwardly, they were full of uncharitable and unkind thoughts. Rash judgment and dishonest actions frequently caused serious loss to neigh- j bom’s in property and character. |
