JUSTICES OF THE PEACE
VARIOUS REPRESENTATIONS.
THE GRAND JURY QUESTION,
IPer Press Association.—Copyright.! WELLINGTON, This Day.
Twenty-three remits, as passed by the conference of Justices of the Peace, were submitted yesterday to the Minister of Justice, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, by a deputation from the Federation of New Zealand Justices Association.
In reply to the suggested abolition of grand juries, Mr Cobbe said that his department was watching very closely the result of the experiment in Britain, and the matter would be given full consideration. He agreed that the placarding of doors of public buildings with notices regarding the rights of objections to the jury list was rather antiquated.
The Minister stated that the Child Welfare Act would be revised, particularly in the direction of removing existing anomalies.
In regard to remits dealing with motor vehicles, noisy cycles and highway dangers, he said that these questions did not come under his jurisdiction, but he would submit them to the Minister of Transport.
Referring to the appointment of Justices of the Peace, the Ministei said that every care was taken in the investigations following nominations. An effort was being made to prepare an up-to-date list of justices. Consideration would also be given to a suggestion to establish central offices for the use of justices and members of the public.
