MAORIS V. PAKEHAS
TODAY’S RUGBY TUSSLE SCRAPPY GAME AT PARK. PAKEHAS 15; MAORIS 9. With the Walker and Hall Cup in dispute, the Maori and Pakeha junior Rugby representative teams met in the curtain-raiser at Kensington Park today. Several last minute alterations in both sides resulted in a loss of combination, and, although they tried to open up the game the back movements did not progress very far. The teams were: — Pakehas. Primrose (Waiotira). Dunn (Hikurangi), Berich (Waiotira),-Gloyn (Hora Hora), Campbell (Opuawhanga), R. McKenzie (Manaia), Codling (Hikurangi), L. and H. Hutchinson (Manaia), Robinson (Manaia), Pomfrett (Hikurangi), Haigh (Old Boys), C. McKenzie (Manaia), Thompson, (Waiotira), Taylor (Hora Hora). Maoris. J. Davis (Hikurangi), T. Were (Poroti). P. Tito (Poroti), Mahunga (Hora Hora), M. Mackie (Opuawhanga), Daniel (Mangakahia), Porter (Mangakahia), Dysart (Opuawhanga), P. Rika (Mangakahia), Peters (Opuawhanga), Edwards (Poroti), A. Tito (Poroti), Dickey (Manaia), Tuhi (Poroti), C. Mackie (Opuawhanga). The Play. The Pakehas, wearing the blue jerseys, were the first to attack, and their back line swung into action on several occasions. Gloyn made a feeble attempt to drop-kick hut redeemed himself a minute later, when the half worked a blind side move and the fast winger flew across, Peters missed. In the play which followed, M. Mackie was seen in some good work for the Maoris, who equalised when Edwards kicked a penalty goal. The Pakehas were not long in gaining the lead, and after Berich had drawn a couple of men he sent Dunn across at the corner. Pakehas 6 Maoris 3 The Maoris fought hard, and narrowly missed a, free kick, but shortly befdre half-time Dunn snapped up the ball and flashed down the line. He was pulled down just short of scoring, but got up again and scrambled over for an unconverted try: Pakehas •• ■ 9 Maoris 3 The second spell commenced with an interchange of long kicks which terminated in M. Mackie sensationally charging one down right off tlie boot of Primrose. Over-eagerness constantly deprived the Maoris of the advantages they had gained, but they kept hammering away, and after all the backs had handled, C. Mackie gathered in a pass to show his speed on the wing. He wsis brought down and the Natives commenced a drop-kicking orgy, none of the “pots” going near the mark. Play became rather desultory, with the Pakeha forwards having the best of it. Their opponents conceded another penalty and Gloyn landed a beautiful goal. Pakehas 12 Maoris 3 Starting in the Maoris’ twenty-five, the Pakeha backs set a scintillating movement afoot. Codling, who was playing a grand game behind the pack, started it off, and Campbell, with Bercich backing up splendidly, tore .the defence to pieces for Bercich to score the best try of the match. Primrose failed with the kick. Immediately afterwards, the Blues were penalised for lifting in the scrum. Edwards piloted a nice kick over the bar. Pakehas 15 • Maoris 6 Playing more spectacular football, the Pakehas had it their own way for a time, but the Maoris counter-attack-ed, and P. Tito finished the game up by dashing over solo, making the final score: PAKEHAS 15 MAORIS 9 Mr J. Beehre was referee. SECONDARY SCHOOLS. WHANGAREI DEFEATS TAKAPUNA. (Special tt. "Nnrrjipr*. The Takapuna forwards, in the second half, completely dominated the situation, but they were up against superior tactics on the part of the Whangarei backs, who displayed splendid combination throughout the game.
