GUARANTEED PRICES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —As expressed in your issue of the 13th inst, the comments of Mr A. J. Sinclair on the above subject can be summarised in his assertion that the advocacy of guaranteed prices by an ex-president of the Labour Party is “merely a vote-catching expedient.” That provocative expression nullifies his elaborated contention that a policy of guaranteed prices for products is an impossibility. Why? Simply because he says so, but fails to show that money power acts as a deterrent on votive power; also that the State would guarantee prices to capable working producers only, including wage and salary earners; and also that boards and inspectors will be required to safeguard the policy of the guarantors of land and factory pro-, ducers—all keeping accounts of their yearly expenditure and profits. Currency can, with equal justice to everyone, be created by the State for ex-
change in New Zealand only. In-
comes can be limited —also profits. Land values can be assessed in accord with profits, and land speculation can be prevented. Altruism can be made prevalent by just laws administered impartiality. {‘Desperate diseases require desperate remedies,” and there can be no doubt about the economic desperation caused by scientists and the acquirement of unlimited richness by individuals and companies. I am, etc., WILLIAM R. KEAY. Herekino. ■
