Higher prices than those ruling last week are being asked today for many varieties of fruit and vegetables. Brussels sprouts, lettuce and celery are all dearer than they were last week, wholesale prices having risen sharply during the past few days, after being for the past few weeks much lower lhan usual at this time of the year. Good quality cooking apples and dessert pears are also slightly dearer than they were last week. The last hothouse grapes of the season were sold this week at high prices, but plums and cherries, imported from California, have appeared in the shops, the former selling at 1/- a lb, and the latter at 1/6 a lb.

The price of eggs remained at last week’s level, 1/6 a dozen, and the price of butter is also unchanged. Quotations are: — First grade hen eggs, 1/6 per dozen; duck, 1/6 per dozen. Bacon, in cuts, 9d to 1/1 per lb., rashers 1/4, whole hams l/2£ per lb, ham rashers 1/5.

First grade factory butter, 1/2 per lb.; second grade, 1/- per lb.; farmers’ butter, 9d per lb.

Cheese, mild, full cream, 8d to 1/per lb.; medium and matured, 1/- to 1/3/

Old potatoes, IJd p6r lb.; new potatoes, 3d per lb; kumeras, 2d per lb.; onions, 2d to 3d per lb,; cabbage, 3d to 6d per. lb.; carrots, parsnips, beet, spinach, leeks, radish, Id per bundle; hothouse beans, 2/- per lb; marrows, 2d to 6d each; pumpkins, Id to l£d per lb; celery, 3d to 6d a head; chokos, Id to 2d each; artichokes, Id per lb; silver beet, 2d per bunch; hothouse cucumbers, 3d to 6d each; Brussels sprouts, 6d to 8d per lb. ,

Dessert apples, 3d to 4d per lb; cookers, 3d to 4d per lb.; dessert pears, 4d to sd; cookers, 3d per lb.; oranges, 2/to 3/- a dozen; lemons, 6d to 1/6 per dozen; bananas, 2d to 3d per lb.; tomatoes, lOd to 1/8; pines, 1/- to 1/6 each; Californian grapefruit, 6d each; local grapefruit, 1/- to 2/- per dozen; mandarins, 1/- to 1/6 per dozen; tree tomatoes, 4d to 6d per lb; plums, 1/- per lb; cherries, 1/6 per lb.
