In a three-day match at Eastbourne between England and Australia, on Davis Cup lines, the opening singles resulted: —• Crawford defeated Perry: 6—o, 6—4, B—lo, 6—2. Austin defeated McGrath: 7 5, 3 6, 7—5, 6—2. , Crawford’s form was sound enough, while Perry’s was so unbelievably bad that the Australian had merely to allow the 1934-35 British champion to continue the process of “beating himself.”
Crawford won the first set in eight minutes and led 3—o in the second before Perry played a stroke worthy of a Wimbledon champion. Perry then made a strong effort to recover command, but it was too late to save the r set:. In a great uphill fight, Perry took the third set. After that he was in no condition to stand up against Crawford, who took the fourth set for match.
Austin and McGrath provided a close struggle. McGrath’s serving and volleying were superior, but Austin's greater consistency and flowing ground strokes gave him victory.
