HEATED EXCHANGES

EDUCATION BOARD MEMBERS.

~CALLED' EACH OTHER “LIAR.”

SUBSEQUENT WITHDRAWAL,

[Per Press Association.*—Copyright.] WELLINGTON, This Day.

There were sharp exchanges at a meeting. of the Wellington Education Board yesterday, when two members rose to their feet together and after shouting the word “liar” at each other accepted each other’s challenge to settle matters outside in the timehonoured method. Later, however, each withdrew his remarks; , The difference arose when Mr C. W. McDonald was moving a motion. He made a statement which Mr G. H. Nicholls challenged, and exchanges that were/the reverse of complimentary began to fly, in spite of the chairman’s call for “Order!” ■Mr-McDonald then accused Mr Nicholls of never having anything constructive to offer and recriminations on both sides followed thickly. The chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, insisted on the withdrawal of the word “liar,” and Mr McDonald complied, admitting that he had spoken in the heat of the moment. Several members suggested to Mr Nicholls that he, too, snoiua withdraw what he had said rather than incur the necessity for drastic action on the part of the chairman.

In reply, Mr Nicholls said that Mr McDonald was like a red rag to a bull. “I am that bull, he added, “and I would say, things to him that I would not say to other members. What I said I meant, but I am prepared to withdraw.” The meeting then continued in comparative calm.
