WASHINGTON WELCOME. v VISIT TO WHITE HOUSE. (Received 9. a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 8. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr J. A. Lyons, and his party arrived in Washington today and. were welcomed at the station by the SecretaryGeneral, Mr Cordell Hull, and the British Ambassador, Sir Ronald Lindsay. Mr and Mrs Lyons immediately motored to White H6use, where they were welcomed by President Roosevelt, whose guests they were at dinner in the evening. Mr Lyons and Mr Roosevelt had a conversation on trade;. The visitors have several official engagements for tomorrow. reciprocal trade. GREATER VOLUME EXPECTED. (Received noon.) WASHINGTON, July 9. An expansion of the trade between the United States and Australia is forecast as the result of the discussions between Mr J. A. Lyons and President Roosevelt and Mr Cordell Hull, Secretary of State. Mr Lyons said it was discovered they had a community of interests, in the development of trade and were agreed on general principles of expanding commerce between the two nations, though he has presented no definite proposals concerning a reciprocal trade agreement. Mr Lyons told journalists that progress was made towards closer and better relationships. There might be concrete developments soon. Sir Henry Gullett, who was now in London conferring with British officials, would probably visit Washington en route to Australia. Mr Lyons did not believe the Ottawa agreement was a barrier to a pact between Australia and the United States. Mrs Lyons, in an interview, said: “I will make two speeches in Canada at Ottawa and Montf-cai ” It is thought she may mention, first hand, her view of Mrs Roosevelt, whom she warned, saying: “With your kind peimission I am going to write you up ” Chatting about the trip, Mrs Lyons said her only regret was what she bad not seen. “I was three months in London and I never even saw the Tower of London and I never saw the waxworks. Who in the wide world has seen London if they haven’t seen those things?” she queried.
