Latest advices concerning the imperilled steamer .Maheno, which broke away while under tow by the Oonah, and became helplessly adrift in a cyclone off the coast of Queensland, state that the tug Garlock, despatched from Brisbane cannot reach the Ooonah until after dark, and it' will be impossible then to locate the Maheno. The Oonah is reported to have completely lost sight of the Maheno, which probably will not be located until some time after daybreak tomorrow. A westerly wind is likely to keep her off the coast. Lighthouse keepers report that it is impossible to see more than two | jjniles to sea. The Maheno has wireless equipment, but, in the absence of any messages from her, it is doubtful if her skeleton brew can work it. NO SIGN. IN DANGER OF ROCKS. (Received 10.30 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. From the time that darkness separated her front the Oonah on Monday in a cyclone during the tow to Japan to be scrapped, nothing has been seen of the . Maheno. The Oonah, which had the vessel in tow, and which was also disabled in the gale through the steering gear going wrong, reported that she had drifted 18 miles south-east from where the towline parted, and the Maheno has probably drifted further. It is feared the Maheno is in danger of being driven on the rocks in the general direction of Sandy Cape, on the Queensland coast. The conditions last night, however, were moderating. The opinion in Brisbane is that it may be necessary to send out an aeroplane to locate the Maheno, but at the moment this would be a hopeless quest, with rain squalls reducing visibility to less than two miles.
