(Received Noon.) LONDON, June 26. ■ Cotton (holder of the title), with a score of 68 leads the field in the first round of the British open golf championship at Muirfield. The second round will be played to-; morrow, after which the leading 60 and these tying for; 60th place will play in two rounds on Friday Heavy rain and bad visibility did not prevent Cotton from returning a Muirfield record of 68, unrivalled for sheer ease and uncanny stroke accuracy. A’ driver has never driven so far and so straight at the first hole of 453 yards. His tee shot finished 70 yards from the flag. He reached the ninth 490 yards, with a drive and a mashie niblick. He went out in 33. He started home in torrential rain and was bunkered at the last three holes, but redeemed, his mistakes by magnificent putting. Kirkwood took 33 for his first nine holes, but tore up his card at the 14th.
