MORNINGSIDE FIRE
THIRD DAY OF INQUIRY.
CASE FOR THE RAILWAYS,
ISpectal to "Northern Advocate.”'] AUCKLAND, This Day. “There is not the slightest evidence that anyone saw a spark drop, and the whole thing is a speculation. On the other hand, there will be a good deal of evidence to show that the possibilities are all the other way,” said Mr V. R. Meredith, in the Magistrate’s Court this, morning, when the inquiry into the fire which occurred -at the Morningside timber mill on December i last was continued before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner. Mr Meredith who was opening the case for the Railway Department on the third day of the inquiry which is being held at the instigation of the , Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, drew attention to the necessity of V clearing one’s mind of the natural assuumption that because the fire occurred near a railway line it waa caused by a spark from an engine. The ques- V tions that had to be considered in the 1 present case he added were; —(1) caused the fire in the mill? and (2) whether the railway was diligent in respect to spark arresting devices. (Proceeding.)
