MILK FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

In comparison with Auckland and other cities, Whangarei school children seem to be ad* vantageously situated so far as the supply of milk is concerned. In the cities, difficulty is being experienced in regard to the raising of money for the purchase of milk for the children, but in Whangarei supplies are readily forthcoming. If one happens to pass the Whangarei School, in Bank Street, shortly after 12 o’clock on any school day, one may see long lines of children being supplied with hot milk. No child is allowed to do without milk if he or she wishes to have it at lunch-time. The milk .is supplied at the rate of fourpence per week, but children oi jiarents, who are, or have been, unemployed, are supplied free at the expense of the School Committee, the funds for this pur pose being raised by the efforts of the teachers and the School Committee. 'ln the Infant Department, thanks to the foresight of a member of the committee, Mr Burfoot.. the children are supplied with Ovaltinc made with hot milk. The little ones seem to enjoy this immensely* and there is generally not one drop left in the large can which had been full to the brim. As a citizen recently said: ‘‘What a difference between school today and twenty years ago ! ”
