3200GNS. FOR A CALF

GREAT SCOTTISH PRICE. A correspondent has’ forwarded to the “Advocate’' a clipping from a Scottish newspaper recording a Shorthorn sale in Perth. One of the heading's over-the report of the sale gives the information: “3,200 Guineas each given for two Calrossie Calves.” The correspondent asks: “Do you think we will get these prices in New Zealand?” , o „ * The newspaper states: "So far as Shorthorn sales in Perth are concerned one has to go back to 1929 to find a sale with such high prices as those ajven at Perth on Wednesday. The best of the breed were in great demand, and prices went up to 3,200 Guineas—a figure which was given twice, and both for calves bred by Captain MhcGillivray, Calrossie, Nigg. This price has been rarely exceeded in recent years—a calf from the same herd made 3,500 guineas at the 1920 sales, and this has rarely been exceeded. except, a few years before, when the sensational price of 0,600 guineas was paid by a Canadian breeder for Miilhills Comet, a get by the famous Cupbearer of Collynie. from the famous herd of Mr D. M. Stewart, of Millhills, Crieff—a record for a calf which, probably, will stand for all time. “Captain MacGillivray’s champion entered the ring and the initial hid. was made of 1000 guineas.” The paper states that the bidding went to

2,100 guineas in jumps of 100 guineas, while the huge gallery waited with bated breath. Mr W. Gordon, of Millhills, stopped here. “You’re not turning away here, are you?” asked the auctioneer. The challenge from Mr Gordon was renewed and the bidding went to 3000 guineas. At 3,200 guineas, an English representative won. Other four-figure bids were 1,300 guineas,''l,lso guineas, and 2,400 guineas for a .first prize ’April calf. The champion group from Calrossic made a total of 5.687 guineas, an average of £1,990 9/-, while the Aldie reserve group made 2,565 guineas, to average £897 15/-. In all 212 bulls secured £28,151 0/6. and 13 females £223 2/6. This gave a general average of £126 2/1.
