' The holding of Animal Week in various cities of Australia and New Zealand has had the effect of bringing into prominence the fine humanitarian aims and work of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This society, whose activities mean so' much to the dumb animals, which need, but do.not get, the kindly help of men, is indeed a beneficent organisation. Its bi?anehes in New Zealand have done excellent work, but the lack of finance has proved a serious handicap, for without money it is' impossible to employ competent inspectors in sufficient numbers to extend to animals the protection that is their right. It is noteworthy that the presence of a branch of the society has a salutary influence in any district in which it may operate. The fact that members are on the look out for cases of cruelty has a disciplinary effect upon those who would, if they dared, vent their anger on unoffending animals, but this influence is intensified when a branch is able to employ an inspector authorised to keep eyes and ears open. For some years a branch of the society in Whangarei has rendered fine service, though it, like others, has been handicapped by lack of funds. A very gallant band of ladies have worked valiantly in an endeavour to raise funds for the work of prevention of cruelty, and they are deserving of the hearty support of the public., During last winter the branch was enabled to employ an inspector, whose efforts were of real* value in preventing continuance of cruelty. It is to be hoped that the branch will bo enabled again to employ an inspector this winter.
