Women’s Institute Branch Meetings

Helena Bay

The June meeting cf the Helena Bay Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Booth. Mokau. The report of the W.D.F.W.T. Council, by the delegate. Mrs Bradney. was received. It ;was decided unanimously to donate a shilling per member to the Jubilee Cancer Fund. The competition, “A knitted garment to cost 2/6,” was won by Mrs Connell, with Mrs .Hooper second. Mrs Bradney gave a demonstration of wool rug making from woven material, and Le Clerc showed how to re-foot stockings. The hostesses, Mesdames Booth and Lee, served afternoon tea.

Maungaturoto

Arrangements were finalised for the holding of the Otamatea group meeting, to be held at the end of the month. A competition, ’“Three varieties of sweets,” brought forth many tempting sweets, and recipes were sold for W.I. funds. The winners were Mrs Cpssmith and Mrs Len Worthington, who tied. The judge was Mrs McKenzie, of Marohemo. A roll call, “Sing, say, play or a pdnny pay, provided a varied programme, and a visitor, Miss Rayma Staunton, played a pianoforte solo. A donation of one guinea was forwarded to the Jubilee Cancer Fund. Mrs Linton demonstrated the making of moccasins.

Oruru-Peria

V The Oruru-Peria Women's Institute held their monthly meeting in Garton’s Hall on the sth ult. Mrs* Barri- ■ ball presided over a fair attendance. The motto was: “He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything.” A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs Kelsall asd family. • A discussion took place on the proposed federation in the North. Mrs ' ’Barriball being appointed delegate. £ For the benefit of the members,-it iwas decided to run all competitions half-yearly. • A dance is shortly to be held to raise funds for the Mangonui County R.S.A. ... Mrs Barriball demonstrated “Down Quilt Making,”., and. Mrs Adamson. “"Tatting." Both demonstrations were keenly watched and proved 1 very interesting. ■ The result of the. monthly competitions’were as follows: A plate of pikelets, ’ senior, Mrs Walmsley; junior, Misses J. Taylor and P. Simmonds. An article costing not more than one shilling:- Senior, Mesdames Adamson, Forsyth, P .Francis . and Hancox each secured five point: juniors. Misses J. Taylor and P, Simmonds. A dainty afternoon tea was served by Meidames E. Taylor, J. Francis and Miss E, Lambly.

Parua Bay

The attendance was fair. Mrs Halke, the-president, being absent, Mrs McRae the vice-president, took the chair. Mr James, from Whangarei, explained various netv items in the Winter Show programme. A vote of thanks was passed. A competition for a small loaf was held,- Mrs Fulbrooke receiving most maf’ks. Mrs- Hasty was second. Mrs Rdbinson demonstrated novel art embroidery on cushions. Keen interest was' taken.'• ‘A - very enjoyable afternoon tea was partaken of, bringing to a close" an interesting meeting. Mrs Fulbrboke , and Miss Gloria Fulbrooke -were hostesses for the afternoon. •

Okaihau

The June meeting of the Okaihau Ins'.ilutc was held in the Commerce Hall on Thursday, June 6. Mrs Wiley presiding. Mrs Blundell read her report on the Whangarei Federation meeting. Mr Preuse- gave an interesting lecture on the care of the teeth. Arrangemnls were made for a dance to be- held on Friday, June 14. Tim rcll-call was “A sandwich filling.” The competition for a home-made Icy was won by Mrs Low, with Miss H. Imms second, and Mrs Prouse third. Another competition for the best plum jam was won by Mrs Cameron, with Mrs Bindcn second and Mrs Brown third. The hostesses for the day were: Mrs J. Ogle, Mrs Prouse, Mrs A. Faithfull, and Mrs A. Anderson.

Otamatea

A group meeting of Otamatea Women’s Institutes .was held at Maungaturoto on June 30. There are 13 Institutes in the group, and a representative meeting was held, with the hall crowded for the Drama Festival in the afternoon. All were pleased to have Mrs Brown (president) and Miss Dbrehill (secretary), of the Whangarei District Federation present. At the close of the afternoon Mrs Brown addressed the meeting on W.I. business. Three plays were presented and Mrs Stratton, of Auckland, placed them as follows: First, “The Bride,” by Maungaturoto; second, “The Mere Man,” by Marohemo; and third, “The Braver Sex',” by Maungaturoto. Mrs Stratton spoke very helpfully on play production and encouraged more teams to enter plays. She was presented with a posy of flowers. During the business session questions discussed' were the next group meeting, the Institute courts at the North Kaipara show and exhibits of ■ flowers 1 there, and the Flower Show. A panel of demonstrators for the ■group is to be formed, and it is hoped Institutes will benefit and programmes be more varied.

Tauraroa

The June meeting of the Tauraroa Women’s Institute took the form of a social. The proceeds amounted to £2 10/, to go' to the Crippled Children’s Fund. The door takings were not up to expectations, but the stalls did good business. Much appreciated items were rendered by Master J. Roper and Miss G. Purdon. A game for the children created much amusement, the prizes for which were presented by Mrs W. McCullough and won by Miss Marie Browne and Master Laurie Sewell. A Mcnte Carlo dance, the prizes for which were presented by Mrs R. McCullough, was won by Mrs Owens and Mr T. McCullough. On Thursday, June 13, a business meeting was held in the hall. There was a small attendance. Mr Butler addressed the meeting re the Winter Show. Additional members were elected to the committee, which was short. The distribution of the seeds was left over for a more representative meeting. ~

Wa in u i-A h ipara

The June meeting of the WainuiAhipara Institute was held at Mrs H. S. Masters’ , residence on Thursday, June 6ih. Mrs Shirley Masters presided ever a fair attendance of members. A delegate was chosen to represent the Institute at the meeting to be held in Kaitaia during the month, to form the Mangonui Federation. The competition for the month was the prettiest and most useful articles from a flour bag. Mrs ,S. Masters, Misses Zita Berghan and. Z. Masters were successful for first place in the prettiest section.' For the most useful. Miss H. Masters was first, and Mesdames S. and A. Masters were second. Miss Audrey Masters was first in the junior section. The competition for next month will be for the best sponge roll. The roll-call was “My most embarrassing moment.and caused a greatdeal of amusement. The next one will be, “A good cake recipe. - ’ Mrs A. Moricc won the competition for the number of grains of corn in a bottle, and Miss Z. Berghan was the lucky one in the other competition. A dainty afternoon, tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames M. and S. Masters and Miss Z. Berghan,

Happy Valley

The members of the Happy Valley Institute and their families spent a very pleasant afternoon at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Wooster on Thursday last, at which Miss Doreen Wooster, who is to be married 'shortly, was the guest of honour. Games were played and several recitations and* musical items contributed. A number of useful and artistic gifts were received by the bride-to-be., The Institute members presented her with a copy of “Aspirations,” poker-worked on polished wood, with a border cf kowhaj blossoms, and the Happy Valley settlers gave her a pyrex casserole as a slight token of appreciation of her services as church organist. Mr R. McLeod returned thanks on' behalf of Miss Wocsler.

Kaik&he

Mrs Smith presided over the usual monthly meeting of the Kaikohe Institute on - the 7th of June. There was a very good attendance of members. The roll-call, “A Rule for Health,” was very well responded to. A competition, “Something new out of something old,” brought forth a good display of varied articles, of which it was decided to make two classes to assist judging. Mrs Vail was the winner of the miscellaneous class with a crochet bath mat, and Mrs Heslop won the garment class with a silk blouse made from a shirt. Mrs Smhh gave an- interesting demonstration of raw wool dyed with lichen, and explained a method for curing sheep skins. A fair amount of time was occupied with business in -connection with the group meeting to be held on June 25. Three new members were welcomed. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames McGregor, Brcdie, C. Dickenson and Leigh.

Mangapai

The June meeting was held In the hall. Mrs A. C. Ha3 r ward- was in the chair. It was decided to enter for baking powder prizes, the first competition to be for sponge sandwich (butter), to be judged at the July meeting. It was decided to compete in several departments of the Institute section at the Winter Show. Mrs P. Carter gave an- interesting explanation of making lemon peel. The roll-call, “Limericks,” caused amusement. A “bring and buy” stall, in aid of the Cancer Relief Fund, brought the sum- of 34/-, and was augmented by a further £1 (approx.) in the evening at a social promoted by the Institute, and run in conjunction with the social club. Bridge and table tennis tournaments were held in the evening, and -prizes were donated -by Mrs P. Carter and Mr A. Hayward. The winners of bridge were Miss McPhoe and Mr Draffin (Mata). Mr J. Price won the table tennis handicap tournament. During the evening, Mr H. W. James, of the Winter Show Committee, addressed the people, explaining the aims and objects of the Show. He appealed to the country people, and Institute members in particular, to do their utmost to make the Show a success.

Maromaku

Maromaku Institute met on June 1, with a good attendance of members. After routine business was transacted, Mrs Andrews was elected delegate to attend the Dominion Conference, to be held in Auckland. Roll-call brought forth numerous useful gardening hints, and the competition (11 entries) for scones resulted as follows: —Mrs N. Mason 1, Mrs Woodcock 2, Mrs Brydon 3. The hostesses for the afternoon. .Mesdames Hay and Mason, entertained with charades and games. A most interesting demonstration on pruning fruit trees and rose bushes was given by Mr Mayhew. Afternoon tea concluded a .very enjoyable meeting.

Waipu

Mrs J. P. McKay presided over a very small attendance at the June meeting. A letter was received acknowledging books and papers sent for the inmates of the hospital. The delegate gave a very interesting report on the annual meeting of the Whangarei Federation, and Miss Cole 1 contributed two songs. The sale of mystery parcels caused a lot of fun, the prize for the most original one being secured by Mrs Donaldson. A roll-call on the uses of potatoes, showed that they contain curative properties as well as substantial food values. A paper. “The Traders in Armaments,” culled from a recent Institute journal, was read by Mrs J. P. McKay, and received with very great interest. The hostesses were Mesdames M. McLeod and Walters, and Miss Riddle.

Kir ip aha

On June 11. there was a largo attendance at the Kiripaka Hail, when members of the Kiripaka, Wharcorl and Ngunguru Institutes met for the afternoon. Mrs SimmnndJ presided, and Mrs A. O. Brown, president ol the Whangarci Federation, addressed the meeting and helped to form a. group of the three Institutes. Mrs F. Sirnmonds was elected convener of the new group, and the executive officers of the three Institutes were chosen as the committee. During the afternoon,' Mr C. P. Butler gave an address with the object cf interesting the members in the Winter Show. He was received with enthusiasm and was given promises of help. Two amusing sketches were by members of the Ngunguru Institute, and) the Whareora mannequin parade was much admired. Musical items were rendered by Mrs Knapp, Mrs Cliff Smith, Mrs Robert Johnson, and Miss Jean Smithies. Afternoon tea was served, and the numerous and beautiful entries for the competition. “A warm garment for a child,” were much admired. The first prize was won by Mrs Lloyd and the second by Mrs Craig. All the garments will be forwarded to the Plunket Nurse. A hearty vote of thanks for her help and advice, was accorded to Mrs Brown.

Mangonui

A meeting of the Mangonui Women's Institute was held in McKay's hall on the 6th inst., Mrs W. A. Wrathall presiding over a good attendance. The competition was “The most serviceable article made from one yard of cotton material." and some very good and varied work was shown. Mrs W. A. Wrathall and Mrs R. T. Wrathall acted as hostesses. After the business was completed, the time was spent in competitions and community singing, which was much enjoyed.
