A conspicuous increase in the re venue from taxation in New Zealanc during the last financial year, as com pared with the returns for 1933-34, i: disclosed in the gazetted abstract o; statistics dealing with the nationa accounts. The respective totals an £20,177,606 and £17,059,829, thus disclosing an increment of no less thar £3,117,777. Aggregates of the x’espective sections are as follow.—

The net expenditure under special Acts last year totalled £23,100, compared with £22,504 in the preceding year. Debt services cost £9,780,628, compared with £10,397,332. Interest payments amounted to £8,023,812 as against £8,836,467 in 1933-34. Administration and management costs £117,732 as compared with £61,045. Payments under the repayment of public debts act 1925, section 11, total £1,578,293 compared with £1,392,257. Under the heading grants and subsidies the payment of a proportion of the totalisator duties to racing clubs amounted to £27,289, the amount in the preceding year being £26,404. The contribution toward the costs of the Singapore naval base was again £IOO,OOO. Outlay on Highways. Expenditure on highways totalled £1,586,964, compared with £1,201,837. The details are as follows: Tyre tax, fees and fines, transferred to the Main Highways Account, £483,353. Tax on motor spirits transferred to the Main Highways Account, £670,506. Tax on motor spirit paid to boroughs, £110,748. Expenses of collecting and making refunds, £21,073. Motor vehicles mileage tax and penalties, £1284. The sum of £903,071 was spent on defence, £437,839 going to naval defence and £465,232 to general defence. The corresponding figures in 1933-34 were:: Naval £397,384 and general defences £264,723, the total being £662,107.

Industries and Social; On the development of primary and secondary industries the expenditure last year totalled £933,620, compared with £1,036,741 in the preceding year. On social services the net expenditure last year compared with that for 1933-34 was: —
