PLUNKET SOCIETY

WHANGAREI BRANCH BENEFITS. COUNTY CONTRIBUTES £25. . The Whangarei County Council today set aside £25 —the same amount as last year—on its estimates as a. contribution to the local branch of the Plunket Society. “The natural channel for our support to tins object is through the hospital board,” said the chairman. Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, “but as the department makes a direct grant to the parent Plunket Society, ' amounts voted by hospital boards are no longer subsidised. The people of the district should contribute in recognition of the splendid 'work the society is doing in the county. Advice and help to mothers are available throughout the , whole county, and are very much appreciated.” Cr. Blake: “The society has done.

and is doing, a remarkably fine work.” v He seconded the chairman’s motion ; that £25 be contributed. “We give to, no more deserving • object,” said Cr. J. Morrison. Considering that the council was limited to £IOO unauthorised expenditure, Cr. F. Elliott* thought that to ■ give a quarter of this was rather large. Upon the chairman stating that the Society would be embarrassed finanpi ally if .the donation was not renewed, and announcing that the borough council also contributed, the motion was carried unanimously.
