WHITE PINE RESERVES
, CONSERVING THE SUPPLY. j EXPORT TO AUSTRALIA. • INTERESTS OF NORTH. “The white pine resources in Westland are being conserved as much in the interests of the North Island butter manufacturers as those elsewhere,” states the Hon. Sir E. A. Ransom, Commissioner of State Forests, in a letter to dairy factories, relative to the question of conserving white pine supplies for the dairying industry in the Auckland province. “As regards the white pine resources of the North Island.” the letter continues, “these supply for local requirements over twenty million feet b.m. per annum, but only one million feet b.m. for export, which for all practical purposes is equivalent to conservation for local use. “Although under present conditions the South Westland forests are rated as inaccessible, it is only a matter of time before practically the whole of the North Island white pine requirements will be drawn from these reserves, I can assure you that the question of white pine exports to Australia is under constant review by the Government, which is fully seized of the necessity for guarding against any dangerous increase in this trade and of ensuring adequate supplies for local requirements.”
