SUCCESS AT LAST
OMANA REFLOATED ONE HOUR’S STRUGGLE MINOR DAMAGE ONLY [Per Press Association. — Copyright.} ■ GREYMOUTH, This Day, After being *stranded on a gravel bank in the Grey River since Sunday, the Union Company’s steamer Omana was refloated this morning at 7.30. The unloading of timber was commenced at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon and another unsuccessful effort was made to get the Omana off at 7 p.m. Unloading was then resumed! and continued till 6 o’clock this morning. With the Kalingo locked alongside the Omana and both going full speed astern, and with the winches heaving on wires from the wharf and! also with the Kiwitea pulling from *the Gmana’s bows, no impression was made for an hour.
At 7 o’clock, however, the Omana moved astern and! then almost immediately came off with the Kalingo still alongside. The Omana berthed at the wharf with only minor damage to the superstructure, which had resulted from the stranding, and a windlass broken, along with other slight damage. Watersiders are now reloading the timber taken from the Omana and placed aboard the Kalingo. This is approximately 120,000 feet, or 300 tons dead weight. The services of two divers brought from Wellington are not required, and they left again today.
