SUDDEN DEATH
COLLAPSE IN BEDROOM. WELL-KNOWN COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER. SAD HAPPENING AT OHAEAWAT. v The death occhrred with startling suddenness at Ohaeawai this morning' of Mr Edward C. H. Bartlett, well known in the farming and mercantile community of Northland. Mr Bartlett, who since June, 1931, has been in charge of the dairy machinery department»of the North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op., was attending the North Island Sheep Dog Trials, where he was demonstrating an engine. On Thursday night he was one of the entertainers at the smoke concert held in connection with the trials, and last night, with Mrsi Bartlett, he retired in his usual good spirits. They were guests of Mr A. R. Harpham. At 5.30 this morning, Mr Bartlett complained of feeling unwell, and thought an attack of indigestion was coming on. He went to the kitchen, where he took some carbonate of soda. On returning to his roopi he collapsed and died within half a minute. Dr. Frengley, of Kawakawa, was called, and diagnosed that death had: been due to heart disease. An Englishman by birth, Mr .Bartlett attended a public school at Home. At the outbreak of the Great War he joined the forces,: serving with distinction for four years. On one occasion the vessel in which he was travelling was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, and later, when fighting injttie trenches, he was badly gassed. This probably accentuated asthma trouble, from which Mir Bartlett was afflicted for years. > ■ _ .v .. Following the War, Mr Bartlett made a special study of dairy machinery, and for some years represented the Treloar Company, first in the Manawatu and later in North Auckland, with headquarters at Whangarei. His name stood high with all those with whom he had business dealings. • Mr Bartlett was a leading worker in the successful drives made in the cause of charity by local commercial travellers, and his talents as an entertainer were much in demand,. He leaves a widow, a daughter aged 16, and two step-daughters. The body is being brought to Whangarei today. ' '
