THURSDAY HOCKEY ENDS

FINAL GAMES YESTERDAY s UNITED WIN MEN’S. OTHER MATCHES. For the next .three years, at any rate, Whangarei will see no more hockey on Thursday. Yesterday, the final games in this section of the competition were played, and next week all matches will be decided on Saturday. . The men’s Thursday competition has been definitely concluded and the teams will take part in the Saturday section, which will be re-drawn. The ladies’ competitions will be carried on as usual on Saturday. ■ Four games were played at Kensington Park yesterday, where the fields were in excellent order, and two at the High School ground. There were no country games. United won the men’s section, while Ramblers take second place.

MEN’S GAMES. UNITED AND BARGAIN STORE DRAW. , United broke their winning record by drawing with Bargain Store, 2—2. The game' was not fast, though the general run was even. United were not up to their best form and played a man short; The game : started off quietly, with United having the better of exchanges. Patterson had one shot which sailed over the goal. Saul kicked clear easily when Bargain Store broke through, and United sent the ball back to safer territory. Hannam and Angelo were waiting in the circle, but the defence broke the move. Maddren was offside when Bargain Store were in a good position and play syringing back, giving United a practically clear goal. Angelo made a stroke and missed the ball. Patterson,actually goaled, but it was disallowed for obstruction.

Wilson cleared strongly when Bargain Store threatened, but United lost the ball. Bargain Store came back again. After Saul had been penalised for “kicks” the yellow and blacks rushed in and Maddren scored with a strong shot.

Bargain Store were now attacking strongly though United were holding play in neutral territory. United got to the circle on several occasions, but Conaghan was saving brilliantly. Twice he cleared most effectively, desstroying United’s advantageous position. United had a spell of attacking in the circle, but did not seem to be into their stride. When half-time was called the score was unaltered. A minute after resuming Kelly gave sticks in the circle but United rushed to the attack and Angelo scored’in a runaway.—United 1, Bargain Store 1. Again United rushed up when Fyfe placed the ball in a good position but Patterson’s shot was wide. There was a period of even play and then United scored again. The ball was rolled in from the far corner and Angelo and Patterson both chased the ball up. Angelo got his shot in with a clear goal.—United 2, Bargain Store 1. Bargain Store were battling hard to equalise and once had bad luck when the ball missed by inches. United also had several narrow shots. Play was even and both sides were having a fair share of the game.

Bargain Store were intent in equal 4 ising and did not let up. They forced play to United’s circle and there was a bully. United cleared, but Bargain Store sent the ball back and Maddren scored just on the call of time — United 2 Bargain Store 2 Messrs Simpson and Everett refereed. WIN FOR HIKURANGI. BEAT RAMBLERS. Hikurangi finished the Thursday season by beating Ramblers, 6 —5. It \vas a good game and full of interest. From a quiet start Ramblers got to the circle but Munro was offside when he had goaled. Hikurangi came back and there was a penalty corner with no result. Hikurangi had a nice opening when Bay sent the ball into the goal mouth from Ramblers’ back line, but Hamilton was, off side. Although Hikurangi had only nine men they were holding Ramblers and doing most of the attacking. Ramblers failed to take advantage of several good openings in the circle.

Hikurangi came back and McKenzie hit through. Franklin partially cleared, but McKenzie hooked the ball

round and into the goal.—Hikurangi 1, Ramblers 0. Ramblers equalised' when Munro sent a good shot home.—Hikurangi 1, Ramblers 1. Hikurangi were still pressing and vyere having the better of the game. A few minutes before half-time Bay caught the ball on the bounce, and gave Franklin no hope, and almost immediately after the bully-off he took the bg.ll from half way and netted again.—Hikurangi 3, Ramblers 1. Franklin saved well soon after being knocked off his feet in the act. On resuming after half-time Ramblers took up the offensive and in a scramble in the goal Banton got there with a gentle shot. Just before Munro missed one.— Hikurangi 3, Ramblers 2. Hikurangi did not allow this state to continue long and working to the other end Bay neatly beat the goalie again Hikurangi 4, Ramblers 2. ' Ramblers turned a Hikurangi attack into attack on their own • behalf. The ball travelled quickly up the centre of the field and Banton following fast, goaled.—Hikurangi 4, Ramblers 3. . Play was getting keener and Ramblers evened matters up a second later when Banton again scored.—Hikurangi 4, Ramblers 4. Bay then went through on his own to score from the bully at half-way. He beat every man who opposed him and left Franklin standing.—Hikurangi 5, Ramblers 4.

There was another spell of even play and then Hikurangi goaled again. Hamilton made no mistake. —Hikurangi 6, Ramblers 4. Goals were coming at regular intervals now and_. Ramblers returned to the fray to add another to their total. Munro got in following a forward rush and scored:— Hikurangi 6 Ramblers 5 LADIES’ A. ANOTHER WIN FOR HINEMOA. Hinemoa beat Old Gilds by 6 goals to 3 at Kensington Park. The game was fast and interesting. Misses M. Cotter (3), M. Berghan, T. Hutchins and Mrs Meyer scored for the winners, and Misses Simons, M. Sloane and B. Doel for Old Girls. Mr V. Simpson was referee. PORTLAND AND KARAMEA. Portland played a hard game with ’Karamea and won by one goal to nil. Miss D. Harris scored. Mr C. Child refereed.
