BASKETBALL COMPETITIONS. YESTERDAY’S GAMES. SCHOOL A COULl!) IMPROVE. Beautiful summer weather prevailed for continuation of games under the Whangarei Basketball Association’s control yesterday. With High School back after the vacation, the season can now be said to have definitely started. Playing at the High School, College were decisively beaten by School A. Nevertheless, School have plenty of room for improvement, and this will no doubt come with their opportunities for practice and good coaching. Misses Clare Bosselman, Norah Budd and Jean West were the best for School, and Misses Rona Painter, Joan Wilson and Molly Ward stood out for College.

High School B were perhaps a little unfortunate in having to meet Bargain Store A for their first match of the season, especially as a couple of their regular team were absent. School were noticeably weak in passing, and the defence seemed rather slow Bargain Store goal throwers are an excellent combination, and Miss E. Bailey is a decided acquisition to the team. The defence played their usual sound game. Old Girls A travelled to Hikurangi and were just beaten in a close game. Misses G. Parker and J. Reynolds, played a sound game for Old Girls, and for Hikurangi Misses R. Flannagan, N. Smith and M. McCord showed most improvement. In the B Grade, Bargain Store travelled to Otaika and managed to hold the local team to a draw in a high scoring game. The tally, with a minute to go, was in Bargain Store s favour, but Otaika just managed to equalise on time. ■ Another draw eventuated at the School courts between Old Girls B and School C. Old Girls only fielded eight players, and the missing one might have made the difference, although School are a good combination and will undoubtedly improve with coaching. Ngararatunua were again unable to field a team, and City won by default. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. School A 21, College 12. Bargain Store A 17, School A 1. Hikurangi 8, Old Girls A 6. Old Girls B 14, School C 14. Otaika 22, Bargain Store E 22. City won from ■ Ngararatunua by default.
