THE SOCIAL WORLD LEAGUE CLUB FUNCTIONS. SUCCESSFUL DANCE. , As a means of augmenting its funds, the Hikurangi Rugby League Club conducted a in Purdy’s Hall last Friday night. There, was a splendid attendance and the function, the first of an intended series during the football season, proved a fine success. Messrs N. Saul (piano), C. Maxwell j (saxophone), and J. Laverick (drums) ' were responsible for excellent music and Mr F. Viscovitch was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz saw Miss S. Baxter and Mr F. Viscovitch in luck’s way.

WHIST EVENING. TEN TABLES OCCUPIED. Ten tables were occupied at the fortnightly whist evening under the auspices of the Hikurangi- Rugby League Club. The function was held in Purdy’s Hall on Tuesday night and players enjoyed the few hours’ fun. The prizes were won by Mrs McCord and Mr W. Hellens and the consolations by Mrs A. Codling, Senr., and Mr Phillips. A recherche supper was a pleasing feature. . METHODIST SOCIAL. PREPARING FOR SALE* Purdy’s Hall was the venue of a pleasant gathering on Tuesday afternoon. The Methodist Ladies’ Guild were responsible for the promotion of a social as a means of assisting the apron stall at the sale of work taking place next month. What with a nice cheery fire and bowls of paper whites and marigolds, a festive appearance was lent to the hall. A delightful musical programme was contributed to by the following:—Mrs H. Pearson, Mrs Cossill, Rev. Hanna, songs; Lieutenant Ponninghouse, cornet solos; Major Hayes, Captain Penhall, Lieutenant Ponninghouse and Rev. Hanna, quartette. Mrs’Spark was accompaniste. A dainty afternoon tea was served after which the guild president, Mrs Archer, thanked all for their attendance and for the gifts of aprons. LODGE DANCE. MANCHESTER UNITY AFFAIR. At the conclusion of its fortnightly meeting in the Parish Hall on Wednesday night of last week, the Manchester Unity Lodge conducted a very sociable little dance. Visitors from Whangarei

were present. Miss D. Teesdale played piano music, and Mr A. Hawkins acted as M.C. A tasty supper was thoroughly enjoyed. BASKETBALL CLUB. WHIST EVENING HELD. The Hikurangi Old Girls' Basketball Club held the second of a’series of whist evenings on Monday night. Purdy’s Hall was the venue and six tables were in commission. Mrs C. Tunstall and Mr W. Hellens were the prize-win-ners, and Mrs Joe Pickles and Mr Flannagan were the' recipients of the consolations. Supper was served by the basketball girls, SATURDAY NIGHT AFFAIR. SUCCESSFUL RUN. There was another good attendance at the weekly after-pictures dance in the Criterion Theatre on Saturday night. A Whangarei orchestra was responsible for the music and Mr A. Rodgers was M.C. PERSONAL PARS. IN TOWN AND OUT. A pleasant week-end was spent in Auckland by Misses Daisy Gomez, Joan Hall and Leah Ansell. They accompanied Mr R. F. Hall in his car on a business trip to the city last Saturday morning.

Mr and .Mrs A. H. Brown, of Papakura, returned home on' Wednesday morning after a few days as the guests of Mrs E. Cook, King Street. Mr J. Huggup came back on Saturday after a few days in Auckland. Miss F. Neil returned to Hikurangi on Monday at the conclusion of a fortnight’s holiday in'Glen Massey, where she was the guest of Mrs Crackett, Senr., formerly of Hikurangi. Mr S. Ferguson was a passenger on Wednesday’s express for Auckland. After a fortnight’s incapacitation, Mr R. Lomas is still confined to his bed with influenza. Mr W. Lomas, of Okaihau, is staying with his brother, Mr R. Lomas, View Road. ON THE BALL. TOMORROW’S FARE. RUGBY AND LEAGUE. The Hikurangi Rugby and League clubs will be sporting their red and black jerseys again tomorrow and also on Monday when the Whangarei Rugby Union and the Northland Rugby League are staging their annual seven-a-side tournaments in Whangarei. The usual club games tomorrow will be full of interest. In the union code, the Hikurangi seniors are billed to meet Hora Hora in Whangarei while the local juniors, pitted against Opuawhanga will take the field at Dickson Park. i

The teams will be. selected from:—* Seniors: Rarity, Taylor, C, and R. Hamilton, Fuller, Raisbeck, Hutchings, A. McKenzie, Mclnnes, Brydori, Herbert, Redwood (2), Finlayson, Ryder (2), Dickson. Juniors: Davis, McGee, J. and G. Cunningham, B. K. and C. Martin, M. McKenzie, R. and D. Codling, Thorburn, Brydon, Aytori, Nunns. O’Callaghan, Harris, Pomfrett and Burt. ' - The Hikurangi Rugby League seniors make their initial appearance on Jubilee Park, Whangarei, tomorrow. City, who are now on an equality in points, will be their opponents, and with the teams now practically settled down, a good game should ensue. The other senior game, between Takahiwai, leaders in the champiohship, and Kensington, will also be played on Jubilee Park. At Recreation Park, the Hikurangi and Kamo juniors wilLtry conclusions.
