IS IT ETIQUETTE?

INVITATIONS TO VICE-ROYALTY POSITION OF LOCAL BODIES BOROUGH COUNCIL SAYS “NO” Would it be etiquette for the Borough’ Council to invite the GovernorGeneral to visit Whangarei? The Winter Show Executive forwarded an invitation to the GovernorGeneral to officially open the exhibition on the evening of July 3, and asked the Borough Council to cooperate in the request. The council declined to do this, on the grounds that an itinerary for Vice-Regal visits had already been drawn up, and that when the Governor-General chose to visit Whangarei he would give notice of his intention to do so. Mr. W. Jones, however, as Mayor, forwarded a telegram supporting the executive’s invitation. Yesterday the Winter Show Executive received the following letter from Major Arthur. Purvis, Military Secretary to the Governor-General: — “With reference to my telegram tq you of May 20, and to previous correspondence concerning the invitation of your executive to formally open the Whangarei Winter Show on the evening of July 3 and to receive a welcome from the Maoris of North Auckland on the. folio wing day, I am desired to say that His Excellency is not yet in a position to give a decision in the matter. The -opening Of the, show would, of course, require to be preceded by His Excellency’s official visit to the town. This matter, as well as paying a visit to the North Auckland district generally, is now under consideration, and I will communicate with you again as soon as a decision has been arrived at.” Later in the day Mr. H. W. James, chairman of the executive, upon the Borough Council again, asking for their co-operation in the' matter. . , On the understanding that it is the practice for the Governor-General to arrange his official visits and notify local' authorities of the dates selected, the Borough Council could not see its way to proceed further. It has been ipade clear, however, that in the event of .Viscount Galway accepting the invitation to open the show, and notification being received of his official visit, dhe Borough Council will be pleased to co-operate in an official welcome. *
