HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIP. BRITISHER BEATS CHILIAN. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. Results in the British hard court tennis championship at Bournemouth were:— Men’s Singles (third round). —Austin beat Avery, 6—o, 6—o, 6—2; Farquharson (South 'Africa) beat Lee, 10—8, 6 —4, 6 —l; Prenn (Germany) beat Sharpe, 7 —5, 6—2, 6—l; Perry beat Peters, 7—5, 6—3, 9—7. Women’s Singles (third round).— Mrs Whittingstall beat Senorita Lizana (Chile), 6 —3, 4 —6, 6—4; Miss Stammers beat Mrs Hopman (Australia), 6 —4, 6—3. Men’s Doubles (first round).—Farquharson and Kirby (South Africa) beat Sharpe and Tuckey, 4—6, 9—7, 2—6, 6 —o, 6—3; Perry and Butler beat Henderson and Lysaght, 6—3, 2—6, 6 — 4, 6 — 3, DAVIS CUP TIE. AUSTRALIANS ON THE SCENE. N.Z. SINGLES PLAYERS. (Received Noon.) LONDON, May 1. The only persons to welcome the Australian tennis players on their arrival at the station at Bournemouth were the officials of the Lawn Tennis Association and Mr E. D. Andrews (Manawatu), captain of the New Zealand Davis, Cup team. The latter announced that A. C. Stedman (Auckland), and C. E. Malfroy (Wellington), would play in the singles against Australia at Eastbourne* The doubles pair had not yet been chosen. Andrews has recovered from his sprained ankle. The New Zealand team is being coached in London. The Australians go to Eastbourne on May 4 or 5 to practise for Davis Cup tie.
