SERIOUS SHORTAGE
ITALIAN POPULATION. ' BIRTH RATE AT LOW EBB. CONCERN FOR THE FUTURE. (Received 9 a.m.) . ROME, February 7. The concern of the Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, over the decline of the birth rate in Italy is evidenced by the vigorous appeal made by his newspaper, “II Popolo d’ Italia,” which asks: “Who is going to drink the milk supplied by the farmers if there are no babies? Two and a half millions have failed to be born in the last twelve years. This means a gap in our manhood four times as great as our loss in the Great War. “The Fatherland has been cheated of one million ’future soldiers, and every branch of industry is suffering from the low birth rate.”
