GRENADIER GUARDSMAN’S HOLIDAY
After a separation of 17 years, Mr | J. Finikin, a member of the Grenadier Guards Band, has been enjoying a short leave in New Plymouth, during which there has been a happy reunion with his mother and members of his family. Mr Finikin joined the band of the Ist Royal Scots after leaving school in England. In 1914, when only' 14 years old, he was privileged to play troops on their way to the front, and after the war he served in Germany and India. It was while he was in the band of the Ist Royal Scots that he played at the wedding of the Princess Royal and Viscount Lascelles (now Earl of Harewood), and his mother treasures the card then presented to him. After leaving the Royal Scots Band, Mr Finikin joined the police force, but he was soon back in the army again, this time in the famous band of the ’ Grenadier Guards, in i which he plays one of the E flat bass instruments. Since being separated from his family he has married, but his wife is in England while he is on tour. It was while he was still absent on service nearly 11 years ago that his widowed mother, three brothers and sisters left Staffordshire for New Zealand to join another member of the family.
