DESTRUCTIVE FIRE
DAMAGE £4OO. I RAILWAY ENGINE SHEDS. [Special to “Northern Advocate”! HAMILTON, This Day. Fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the railway engine sheds atFrankton Junction, and damage estimated at £4OOO was occasioned. Several engines were removed to safety. The outbreak apparently originated in the roof. It was this portion of the building that suffered most damage. At first the work of the brigade was hampered by the distance of the building from the street water mains. Two leads of hose were connected up, one 800 feet. from High Street, and another 700 feet from Queen’s Avenue.
A fresh north-easterly wind which was blowing assisted the flames to spread rapidly. As soon as the outbreak was discovered two enginedrivers set to work to remove the locomotives from the sheds. A number were drawn into the main yard, while several were shunted out at the back of the shed.
Other members “of the shed staff connected several leads of hose to the department’s own water main, and these were in operation when the brigade arrived.
