ANOTHER REFUSAL

NO MONEY FOR MAIN NORTH ROAD. The request to the Minister of Public Works that lie subsidise £IOO held by the Mangonui County Council for improvements to the Waipapakauri-Hou-hora Road, met with no better response than former requests, the Minister again refusing to give any assistance whatever, and repeating facts already well known to the council. When the Minister’s letter came before the county council, Mr Steed said the position appeared to be hopeless till March 31 next. Mr Ronayne had suggested that the council make every effort to keep the road maintained. He could got in touch with the certifying officer for unemployment and learn what labour was available. They were pretty well assured of a further substantial grant for the road next year. Cr. Steed was authorised to arrange for maintenance men, if possible.
