BAY OF ISLANDS

MEETING OF COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Bay of Islands County Council was held at Kawakawa yesterday, Cr. H. S. Robinson presiding over Crs. J. G. Ritchie, G. H. McKenzie, A. E. Bisset, A. H. Morgan, S. W. Smith, H. T. Atkinson, and H, '| I . Bates. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. L. Williams. The council decided to apply to the A.A. for the erection of signs near the Opua School on the Kawakawa-Opua road. •

The Waimairi County Council, writing with reference to the proposal to amend the voting classification in counties by substituting universal suffrage for the present system, urged the council to oppose vigorously any alteration to the existing County Voters’ Franchise. This was agreed to.

The Native Department, before putting in hand the making of a road, Opahi-Waiomio, sought the council’s attitude. The council considered that when the Dpahi-Pokapu Road was formed ample provision for access to Opahi would be afforded, and stated that it would not accept dedication of the proposed road or to guarantee maintenance if it was put in.

Messrs. York, Callaghan and Kaye waited on the board to request that the Motatau No. 2 Main Block road should be completed. It was also requested that the Opahi-Pokopu stock route to the freezing works be made passable. The road inspector and the member for the riding, are to inspect the road.

Mr T. Neill was appointed assistant ranger, with power to impound stock found straying on county roads. Permanent and Casual Wages. Cr. Smith brought up the question of the anomalous state ,of wage rates and moved: “That the portion of a resolution passed by the council on April 16, 1931, fixing the rate of pay for casual labourers at 10/- per day, be rescinded, and that the rate be raised to 12/- a day.” Cr. Bisset seconded and strongly supported the motion. Cr. Morgan moved an amendment that the rate be 11/- a day. The chairman seconded pro forma. The amendment was lost. The motion was also lost.

Resolutions. The chairman was authorised to arrange with the P.W.D. for the formation of the Okaihau end of Preston’s Road, to give access to Myers and others. The road inspector was instructed to report at next meeting upon the condition of the road leading to Mr McDonald’s property at Otao. Steps are to be taken under the P.W.D. Act to take land required for the road deviation at Mangamutu Bridge (Kaikohe). Notice is to be served on owners of land on the Kawakawa, Waiomio, and Otiria streams to clear willows in terms of the P.W. Act. The sum of £23 10/- was transferred from the Mataraua Riding to the Kawakawa Riding in settlement of the cost of the shed removed for the unemployment camp at Pokapu to the council’s property at Punakehu River.
