SURPLUS TONNAGE
WORLD SHIPPING PROBLEM. CONFERENCE AT EARLY DATE. SUBSIDY FACTOR. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, November 10. According to a correspondent of the “Financial News;” a world shipping conference will be held in, London shortly to work out plans for the laying up, and possibly the restriction, of tonnage. The writer says the Chamber oi Shipping has sounded the views of all the maritime nations on the prospects of a conference. Although a full report on the views of the United States will not be received until next Week, reactions elsewhere have been surprisingly favourable. While there is no chance whatever of a complete abolition of subsidies, the chances of some reasonable arrangement for scrapping or laying up surplus tonnage are said to be very much brighter than they were a few months ago.
