SYDNEY REGATTA WIN FOR WANGANUI EIGHT. KERR CUP ANNEXED. [United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright] (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY,: November 11. Rowing at--the Sydney Regatta yesterday, the Wanganui Union crew very comfortably won the Kerr Cup for senior , eights,. over 2000 metres. The trophy, which: was specially presented for yesterday’s race, becomes the property of' the winners. Taking the lead after the first 200 yards, the visitors; rapidly drew away, and at the. half mile there was clear water between them and the other crews. The veteran Healey did not have to increase his rate of stroking at any stage to give the crew a three lengths’ victory. A splendid race' resulted between Mosman, Haberfield, Sydney and the New South Wales, police for the minor placings. Mosman finished best for second, and the Sydney crew was a canvas away third. In the 2000 metres senior sculls, both the New Zealanders, Smith and Abbott, contended themselves with minor placings in the heats to qualify for the finals. Owing to indisposition, Smith was unable to’ compete in the final, which was won by a length and a half by Turner, of the New South Wales Police, from Abbott.
Abbott was last in a field of. five with a quarter of a mile to go, but he finished strongly and was sculling well. His showing against Turner, who is the most outstanding sculler in Australia since Bobby Pearce, was really good. C. Pearce, of Balmain, a cousin of Bobby Pearce, was third, a length behind Abbott. Moss, who was injured in Melbourne,. did not row in the Wanganui Union Eight. He was replaced by Luxford.
