WHANGAREI LOOK-OUT
' It is well known that the tourist, especially when pressed for time, makes, for the high'points of town or country in order that he may obtain as wide a view as possible. Information as to where these vantage posts are located is always made available by the local authorities, who realise that the entertainment of visitors is a wise policy. This is a matter in which Whangarei has taken little interest in the past, but it is good to know that the Twenty Thousand Club is realising the need for the exploitation of every attraction of which the town can boast. The construction of a track to the top of Parahaki is one of the tasks to which attention should be paid without loss of (time. It is possible now, of course, to reach the summit, but the climb is something in the nature of an athletic effort, whereas the reconstruction of the track following the ridge from the vicinity of the Onerahi road would provide a delightful walk which would not overtax even the elderly. The view from Parahaki is magnificent, encompassing a sweep of ocean, harbour, country and ‘town.; It is an ideal Spot from which’ tourists might be given. their , first glimpse of the scenic beauty of which Whangarei and its environs can boast. We doubt whether a more glorious view can be obtained in any other part of. New Zealand than that which is unfolded on a fine day when the waters of the harbour are at high tide, and the rugged headlands which 'guard the ’ entrance stand out in all their glory. No tourist should be allowed to pass through this district * without ascending the unique look-out provided by Parahaki. The tourist season is at hand, and the work of making a track such, as we have referred to would constitute an investment productive of an immediate return. The work should not be delayed a moment longer than is absolutely avoidable.
