FINAL PRACTICE
WHANGAREI BAND DOES WELL. QUICKSTEP ACHIEVEMENT. ■ In dismally wet weather ' yesterday, the Whangarei Municipal Silver Band held its final daylight, practice prior to participating in the Auckland Provincial contest on Saturday next. There was a full muster of members. Under the conductorship of Mr A. Dobson, the band made an impressive showing, and a surprisingly large attendance of the general public was highly pleased. The morning was devoted to playing the selection ‘‘The Flying Dutchman,” and the hymn “Nottingham,” with which the band won the gymkhana competition. When the rain slackened in the afternoon, the quickstep “Jack o’L'antern” was rehearsed, the performance being done in good style. The? course of 100 yards was done in 120 paces and 60 seconds, exactly according to competition standard. A feature of the practice was the use of a baton by the drum-major, Mr C. J. Moore. This was the first occasion for some years that the local band has marched behind a baton.
