GREAT ROWING

WHANGAREI BEAT WEST END. POWELL CUP CONTEST. SATURDAY’S RACE. ' With four lengths to spare, the Whangarei Rowing Club’s heavy maiden crew beat West End (Auckland) for the Powell Cup on Saturday afternoon. This was the first race for the cup presented by Mr C. R. Powell, which is for annual competition between the Whangarei Rowing Club and Auckland clubs. The crews comprised:— Whangarei.—Bindon (stroke), Gardiner, Patterson and Storey. . ■ ' . ! West End.—K. Douglas (stroke), J. Hill, D. Rockel and J.‘McPherson. . = The course was about one mile, and the start was made from a point in the vicinity of Limeburners’ Creek, the finishing point being at the Town Wharf. Whangarei gained an early lead and maintained this until a short distance from the finish, when a spurt increased their lead to lengths. Fourteen seconds separated the tw;o • boats. Whangarei rowed with fine precision and never looked like being beaten over the latter part of the course.," ■
