WHANGAREI’S AIR PORT
TEMPORARY BASE SUGGESTED. COUNTY COUNCIL FAVOURABLE. Following an inspection made by, Mr Gibson, of the Public Works Department, Squadron-Leader Isitt, representatives of the local bodies interested, and the Aero Club, the following recommendation was made to the Engineer-inrChief of the Public Works Department: (1) That the Kioreroa triangle area be cleared of mangroves, and used as a temporary landing ground only to meet the immediate flying requirements of the town.
(2) That the Otaika area, which will be free, from many of the disadvantages of the Kioreroa location, be finally selected as the permanent air port of Whangarei on the understanding that so soon as it is ready flying activities be transferred from Kioreroa.
This recommendation was carried further in a communication received by the Whangarei County Council today from the District Enginner, Mr R. H. P. Ronayne, who intimated that if the council was prepared to endorse the foregoing proposals, his department would be pleased to submit detailed proposals for the preparation of the Kioreroa area as a temporary ground, and the establishment of a permanent air port at Otaika.
On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to agree to the arrangement, provided no financial liability devolved upon the Whangarei County Council.
