THE TENNIS SEASON CJiTO’S-"ANNUAL MEETING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. With the opening of the 1934r35 season less than a fortnight distant, members of the Hikurangi Tennis Club are preparing! for another summer'ssport. In the Fire, Brigade Station, on ,Tuesday night, the club held its twelfth annual meeting, which a good attendance was '.presided' over by Mr H. Pearson. , , ' * The balance sheet, as submitted by the secretary, Mr. A. P. Craighead, disclosed a credit'of £25 14/8. of officers for the ensuing -term resulted: —Patron, Mr J. Te'esd‘ale; ±6-elected; president, Mr R. YoungVvVice-presidenfsVt Mr J. Brady and Mf’J.'N. Stark; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. Burton; committee, Mes - dames ,H; Pearson, R. Young, Misses P. Dunn, K. Stockley and D. Gomez, and Messrs T v Burley, H. Pearson, E. Dunn, C. Hamilton, P. Craighead and J. Burton; delegates to North Auckland Association, Mr T. Burton. Four bondholders who have acted in this capacity :for several years were elected life members. All debentureholders who are non-playing members are to receive 50 per cent, rebate, while the same conditions as last year apply in the ciisie bf playing members. The official opening day was decided upon, and subscriptions Were fixed at the sarnie rate as previously.

A hearty vote of thanks to the outgoing officers concluded an enthusiastic gathering. v* BENEFIT WHIST. \ AID FOR MR F. WHITEHEAD.’ The wet weather on Wednesday of last week caused a postponement of the weekly whist evening conducted as a benefit to Mr F. Whitehead until Friday, when a gobd number of enthusiasts assembled at the home of Mrs W. Hellens. Mrs Brookfield and Mr Nurse were successful and the consolations fell to the lot of Mrs Hellens and Mrs Nurse.

UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. SIXPENNY WHIRL. The unemployed relief dance was held as usual in Purdy’s Hall on Saturday night and was favoured with a fair attendance. Music was provided by Miss D. Teesdale and Messrs P. Mitchell and J. Laverick, and Mr A. Massey contributed extras. Mr G. Wetherall was M.C. PERSONAL PARS. IN TOWN AND OUT. Mrs W. G. Harris returned home by Saturday’s express at the conclusion of a three weeks’ holiday in Auckland. Mr J. N. Stark left on Monday for a few r days’ sojourn in Dargaville. Mr A. Buchanan, Senr., is an inmate of the Whangarei District Hospital, undergoing treatment. FALL FROM CHAIR. MRS SPARK’S MISFORTUNE. Mrs J. Spark, of Valley Road, was the victim of an unfortunate accident at her home on Tuesday. In the course of her household duties Mrs Spark was standing on a chair, which upended, and she was thrown to the floor. Mrs Spark suffered slight strain and shock and has been confined to her bed, but has now almost completely recovered.

AMATEUR WRESTLING. TOURNEY IN HIKURANGI. CLUB’S BRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT. Although not of Targe proportions, the number of spectators at an amateur wrestling tournament, conducted by the Hikurangi Gymnasium Club in the Criterion Theatre on Monday night, derived splendid entertainment from the ten bouts which comprised the bill of fare. The effort deserved better support. At an interval in the proceedings. Messrs McMahon (Northland) and M, Harris (Hikurangi) gave an exhibition of holds, while a particularly popular item was a mock professional “go,” featuring H. Findlay and N. Boyd, both members of the Whangarei Gymnasium Club. Following are the results of the bouts, in which Mr J. Webb acted as referee:— J. Wilson, 8.8 (Hikurangi), beat T. Dickey, 8.8 (Whangarei), by one fall;

I. Boyd, 9.0 (Whangarei), drew with | W. Norwood, 8.12 (Whangarei), no j falls; Des. Codling, 9.0 (Hikurangi), j beat W. Hill, 9.0 (Whangarei), by two j straight falls; G. Smith, 9.10 (Hiku- | rangi), beat H. Findlay, 9.12 (Whangarei), by one fall; S. Pomfret, 10.7 (Hikurangi), beat C. Wright, 10.6 (Whangarei), by two straight falls; L. Cooney, 11.0 (Hikurangi), drew with N. Boyd, 1Q.5 (Whangarei), one fall apiece; D. Baxter, 8.8 (Hikurangi), beat W, Pairama, 8.6 (Whangarei), on points; D. Findlay, 8.8 (Whangarei), beat T. Corness, 8.1. (Hikurangi), by two straight falls; K. Martin, 10.2 (Hikurangi), beat C. Wright, 10.6 (Whangarei), in straight falls.

HOMING PIGEON CLUB. TWO EVENTS LATELY. RESULTS ANNOUNCED. Two events have been conducted by the Hikurangi Homing Pigeon Club recently. The first was a yearling race from Taumarunui, in which 67 birds participated. They were released at 10.15 a.m. and fair weather assisted in the recording of good time. The result was: — G. Davies’ Speedmint, 1091 yards per minute, 1; J. Hazell’s Slippery, 1089.4, 2; R. Longland’s Nevada. 1089.1, 3. In the latest event, 77 old birds comprised the field In a race from Te Kuiti, where they were released at 10 a.m. Although hampered most of the way by a head-wind, fast time was registered, with the following outcome:— R. Longland’s Rin Tin, 1183 yards per minute, 1; E. Gilbey’s Young Seagull, 1182, 2; R. Laurie’s Waro Lass, 1181, 3. The leading averages to date are:— Yeai’lings: G. Davies 29, R. Longlands 27, R. Laurie 23. Old Birds: E. Gilbcy 26, R. Longlands 26, R. Laurie 23. Tomorrow, a race is being held for old birds from Taumarunui. The field will be dispatched at 9.30 a.m.
