FILLING THE GAP

EMPIRE NAVAL DEFENCE. NEW TYPE OP SLOOPS. INITIAL EXPERIMENT (Reeeiyed 9 a.m.) LONDON, September 3. The naval correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” states that the Bittern, the Navy’s first convoy sloop, will be launched shortly at Clydebank. She is designed to fill a . dangerous gap in the Empire’s sea defences, as, owing to treaty restrict, ons, Britain is short of modern cruisers. The Bittern docs not exceed 2000 tons, but she carries two six-inch guns, instead of 4.7 guns hitherto carried by smaller sloops. Consequently, the Bittern should he able to engage any submarine. If the type is successful, 25 to 30 may bo added to the Navy. They would be an invaluable reinforcement. Each costs loss than a destroyer.
