THE LONSDALE BELT
TAELETON REGAINS TROPHY. DEFEAT OP WATSON. What a difference a grudge between two boxers makes to a light! Last year, Ncl Tarloton defended his British featherweight, championship and. “Lord Lonsdale” belt against a seaman from the King’s Navy, named Tom “Watson, The referee gave the verdict to Watson on points, a decision which created much post-fight argument. Lord Lonsdale himself —who should be a judge of fighters—stated he was amazed at the referee’s judgment, and that he considered Tarleton had easily retained his title. Other sound critics made similar statements; but the referee’s decision is final, and Ncl lost his coveted title. * It will be remembered that Tarleton whipped Kelso, and was not favoured by the referee ’ when he was givem a draw against Tod Morgan. He injured his leg in the Morgan bout, and returned to England with the intention of coming straight back again.
However, when he arrived home, ho became eager for his old crown again. He postponed his return trip to Sydney again and again, determined that he would again arrive wearing the championship belt. On Thursday night at TarlotoiTs home town —Liverpool — he got his chance; and at the end of 15 rounds ho again possessed his crown. This time he put the decision beyond all doubt, fighting like* a terrier from the start to -the finish. He scored a five-second knockdown; and although Watson had his aggressive moments, Tarlcton always rallied. In the last round ho outfought Watson .from bell to boll, the bout proving one of th 6 best championship affairs staged in the British'lsles for years.
