THE PLAZA’S ATTRACTIONS,
“THE CALAXDAR.”
“The Calandnr,” an adaptation from F.dar Wallace’s stage play of llio same name, which had its initial screening in Whangarei at the Plaza Theatre last night, brings farther fame to the British film industry. It is a picture which has been brought up here by special request of the management, showing, in one way, how much the four-fold excellence it combines in its splendid plot, its skilful direction, its talented cast is appreciated. The turf and its pitfalls have figured in many a drama, but never to better effect or with more authentic realism than in “The Calandar.” A meeting at the famous Ascot racecourse is an added attraction for the audience.
Herbert .Marshal], has the principal role. He brings to his part the masterly touch which is expected from him, and makes an effective figure of the easy-going owner who finds his reputation besmirched by the deceit of a woman with whom he has been in love. To most people, however, the picture will derive a great proportion of its interest from the appearance of Gordon Harkcr, who takes his original play part of Cuthbert, ox-batman, ex-safe-breaker, ex-convict, and present butler to Herbert ’Marshall. His humour is as keen as ever, and his penchant for doleful facial expression is undiminished. Edna Best and Anne Grey add much to the enjoyment in the feminine roles, While Alfred Drayton’s study of a bookmaker with a generous heart is a most effective contribution.
