AN EXPENSIVE AFTERNOON

MAORI FINED FOR THEFT. HAD A FEW DRINKS. A young Maori’s visit to Kaikohe on Saturday proved an expensive one for him. He had a few drinks and then, with several others, went into a drapery and outfitting shop to see about overcoats, the day being very wet. Ho tried on a leather coat and forgot* to take it off before he went out of the shop. Had he taken the hanger with him too he would probably still have the coat. As it was, the theft was soon detected and, after tracing the Maori to Pakaraka, Constable Me Mellon arrested him wearing the coat. The sequel took place before Messrs T. Guerin and Jas. Bcdggood,- J’s.P,, yesterday morning, when the Maori, was fined £5, and ordered to pay So/ for damage to the coat. He consented to a prohibition order being issued against him.
