QUEST FOR GOLD
PLANS OUTLINED. “We are trying to press forward the search for gold, with a view to improving general economic conditions, ’ ’ said Mr W. Bromley, deputy ■chairman of the Unemployment Board yesterday. “The measure of assistance which the Unemployment Board ds prepared to give to goldmining companies depends a good deal on the merits of each proposition. Some companies ask us to find the money while they find the gold. We cannot be interested in such cases. “However, ,in cases where the schemes are approved and the companies propose to spend money in quest of gold, the board >is usually willing to give financial assistance, one condition being that the money advanced should be refunded to us before dividends arc paid.' ’ Since the retirement of Mr .7. S. Jesscp from the board, Mr Bromley has taken charge of the gold development side of the board’s work, and prior to Mr Jcssep’s withdrawal he accompanied Mr Jessep on a tour of goldmhving districts, with a view to becoming more closely acquainted with that phase of activities. If engagements permit, Mr Bromley proposes to leave Wellington towards the end of this week on a visit to the Thames and Coromandel districts. While the object- of this visit is to investigate general unemployment problems, he hopes to deal particularly ■with questions relating to goldmining.
