EMPIRE GAMES

NOEL RYAN BREAKS RECORD v WINS 1500 YARDS TREE STYLE. CRUMP QUALIFIES IX 100 YARDS

{United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph*.—Copyrleht.) (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, August C. The British Empire Games which opened at the White City on Saturday, were continued this afternoon. Although the weather was overcast, a holiday crowd of, 30,000 witnessed the second day’s events, Edwards, the veteran negro Olympic runner, who ran fifth at the Empire Games in Canada, at last gained the Empire halfmile title jyith a magnificent performance. Noel Ryan, the Australian swimmer, brilliantly turned the tables on Piri for the Canadian’s victory in their heat of the 1500 yards, swimming 20 seconds faster than the heat time. The Australian staved off Piri’s determined challenge at the end, without unduly hurrying, by a beautiful long stroke. The failure of Noel Crump, the Now Zealander, to steer a true course up the lane, cost him first place in the third heat of the 100 yards swimming championship. Even then the finish was so close that it seemed a dead heat,'but Larson was given the verdict by 2-5 of a second. In the women’s 200 yards breaststroke, Claire Dennis, the Australian champion, outclassed the field without being extended. She reduced the English record by 1 3-5 seconds. .T, E. Lovelock, New Zealand, is among those ,who qualified for the halfmile tomorrow. The others are Corns, Reeve and Woodcrson (all English) and Wade (Canada).
