RABBIT RAVAGES

AUSTRALIA’S HUGE LOSSES. EXTERMINATION EFFORTS. STUDY OP NEW DISEASE. (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, August 6. .Sir Charles Martin, formerly professor in Melbourne and other universities, is investigating a disease at the Cambridge Physiological Laboratory which it is hoped will greatly assist in the extermination of rabbits. The disease originated in Brazil, and was introduced in English rabbit colonies by accident. Although the experiments of Sir Charles are incomplete, they indicate that the disease is caused by a virus, not by bacteria, that it is harmless oven to such a close relative of the rabbit, as the hare, and it is so acute in infected rabbits that there is little likelihood of immunity developing. If experiments are conducted in Australia when Sir Charles returns, they will have to be carried out on an island as a preliminary safeguard for other forms of animal life, and before I the dissemination of the disease on the mainland is justified. It is estimated that rabbits are responsible for losses in Australia totalling £30,000,000’ a year.
