LESSENING ’QUAKE DANGER. ACTION OF CITY COUNCIL. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Although the Wellington City Council has not the power, to compel owners of buildings with heavy parapets, to lessen the danger- to the public, in the event of earthquake by removing this top hamper, it is not losing any .opportunity of achieving • that, end. city have been served with notices requesting them, in ; the interest ‘ of their'own and public safety, Ho endeavour have such architectural encumberances removed. : -- , - Tl;c response to this request, .it is stated, has not been very satisfactory. Less than half a dozen owners have replied convolving their willingness to do thlT work. Others have replied expressing agreement with the proposal, but stating that, with business as it is, they are quite unable to incur the expense of the work entailed in the demolition of their parapets. •- • • • It is considered in municipal- circles that at least some of these people might be induced .to undertake^ r -the work if. assistance, .wore .forthcoming under the latest scheme of subsidised labour. Practically the whole money involved in the demolition work is pended on labour, and as this form of work has a humanitarian aspect it is thought that the Government, might be induced to extend, the;latest form of subsidy to parapet removal jobs.
