DAVIS CUP

THE DOUBLES DUEL

U.S.A. WINS FOURTH SET RALLY.

PERRY RESERVED FOR SINGLES

>Unlted Press" Association—By icioctric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received .10 a.m.) LONDON, July 30.

In' the Davis Cup challenge round between Britain (holders) and the United .States of America, the doubles match was won by Lott and Stoel'on (U.S.A.), who defeated Loo and Hughes, 7 (I—o, 4—o, 9—7. The first sot rather disproved the assumption that the inclusion of Lee to give Perry a rest made the doubles a gift to the Americans. After a shaky start, with very weak lobbing, the British pair found that Stoofon lacked control in his drives and smashes, and concentrated on him. Lott, however, took control, and rushed through the opposing service in the twelfth game, to take the opening set. iStoofon’s unsteadiness abated*, and the Americans simply massacred their opponents in the second set, notwithstanding Lee’s brilliance in half-volley-ing and standing up to Stoefen’s severest thrusts.

Hughes was in great form in' the third set, when Stoefen was again faulty. The raggedness of the Americans’ piny persisted in the fourth set, in which the Britons rose to great, heights, hut Lott proved the sheet anchor of the United .States pair, with Stoefen occasionally producing an unplayable shot to help win a match in which they were hard pressed.
