JERSEY CLUB

WHANGAREI ANNUAL MEETING. IMPROVING MEMBERSHIP. SALE RING AT KENSINGTON. Tho annual meeting of the Whangarei Jersey Cattle •Breeders’ Club was held on Saturday afternoon, Dr. G. Walker presiding. In his annual report, the president congratulated the club on its increasingly sound position. “The membership is steadily improving, so that now wo have (51 members, an increase of seven over last year,'” the report stated. “Another important point is that most of tho members are financial. Our credit balance at the end of the financial year was over £46, including the subsidy received from the association on our membership fees. We should have had a balance better by over £4 had the social which was hold under our auspices in June been a success instead of a financial loss. A wet night and counter attractions militated against us, but I also must add that only three of our club members attended. The executive came to the conclusion that evidently these socials are not Avanted. We held a bull sale in September,' and a female sale in .lime. The bull sale was quite a successful event, but the same cannot be said for the female event, as few intending purchasers at tended, ami the prices offered Avero appalling. The present executive is strongly advising the incoming executive to seriously consider dropping the female sale, as . vendors cannot be expected to incur so much expense for tho prices offered. The outlook for prices'for onr stock is far from encouraging, but I sincerely hope that prices during this coming season, not only for stock;--but for buttor-fat, Avill show a decidedly upward tendency. At the forthcoming-club sale for bulls on the last Friday .in September, I strongly urge members to offer only their outstanding animals, and to have them in the best possible condition for the sale Ting. They may then have a chance to keep the price level moderately high, enhance the reputation of this sale, and make it one of the outstanding sales of the North Island, a posi-’ tion to which I think it has a right to attain.” The president also commented on tho possibility of running an Oaks on the lines of tho Auckland Jersey Chib. Both the report and balance sheet were Election of Officers. The: following officers Avore elected for the new year:~-President, Dr. G.

Walker; vice-president, 'Mr A. E, Phil

lips; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. Blumhanlt; committee, Messrs. S. CraAVford, W. T. Knowles, C. Stevens, W. G. Johnson, and A. 0. Brown; lion, auditor, Air C. F, Butler. General Business. The question of securing a set of herd books was loft to the first meeting of the executive. If the entries received for the bull sale are ! considered to be excessive, it Avas decided that a two-day sale instead of one day bo held. The question of improved accommodation at Kensington Dark for the holding of sales Avas raised by Air J. A. Finlayson, avlio commented that £33 had been given towards prize money at the A. and I’. Society’s show, but nothing had been given to improve the sale accommodation and attract buyers. He considered that something should be done to improve the accommodation, or change the venue of the sale to a place where there was accommodation. Th president said that it Avas tho intention of tho executive to put something aside for the improvement of tho accommodation. Air Finlayson considered that seating should be provided in tiers, or else a shift made to one of the auctioneers’ premises. Air Phillips considered that the matter should be carefully considered before any decision Avas made. Kensington Park offered good facilities for displaying stock, and the additional cost to make the saleground a reasonable ground would not be much. The president mentioned that the A. and P. Society had some lime a,go refused to allow a sale ring to be built at the park, but Hie building of a ring would not prevent others from using it. The A. & P. Society would not be expeeled to make the alterations.

On the motion of Mr S. Crawford, it was decided that the president approach the A. and P. executive with a view to certain alterations being made to provide a sale ring, with power to offer up to £u(), provided suitable arrangements could be made to find Hie finance. Votes of thanks to the officials for their past season's activities were carried.
