The home team succeeded in retaining the trophy, Hie game ending in a draw — 9 all. The score was perhaps a fair indication of the run of [day, but bad Mnngonui won there would have been no occasion for any surprise. Mangonni had some very fast hades, and two very capable five-eighths, Cowie and Flynn, and though their three-quarter line bad two casualties, they were a better combination Ilian were the linlme Brothers and Pansina on the Bay side. The brunt of the work fell on Dalton and MacLoan. These two practically saved the enp for the Bay. They Avere always on the ball, both in attack and in defence. They saved their side repeatedly. The pick of the Bay fonvards Avere Dawson MacLcan, Kaho and Puke Marsh.

The game was an interesting one owing to the manner in which the fortunes of each side fluctuated and the frequent flashes of bright play. The Bay of Islands team was: J. Edmonds, E. linlme, R. Hulme, Pansina, Duncan MacLcan, Bray, Dalton, Marsh, P. Clark, Kaho, Dawson Mac-

Lean, M. Clark, Muriwai, Doe! and Apita. Mangonni took the field with: Saunders, S. Nathan, H. Nathan, Murray, Cowie, Flynn, Bartlett, Wiki, Walker, Jarvis, Jackson, Merino, Donaldson, Busbv and Whitefield.

Owing’ to receiving a badly cat hand, either from a spike or bnc.kle, H. Nathan had to leave tbo tie Id and receive medical attention. Another three-quarter, Murray, had his head injured in a collision and the wound had to be stitched after tin; match. The departure of Nathan considerably affected the Mangonui play as a forward, Whitcfield, replaced him, and an emergency, Hutley, went into the forwards.

Mangonui were the first to score, after twenty minutes’ play during which Bay were on. the defensive. From the kick off, the Visitors took play into the Bay 2." and a. very dangerous situation was relieved temporarily by Dawson MaeLcan kicking out neat kick and follow-np by Cowie, at halDway. A clever cut-in and a again had Bay in difficulties, but Dalton cleared well. Again Mangonui came on, and again. Mac Lean got in a kick to half-way. Then Edmonds, the full-back, was conspicuous in a brilliant, dash which saved his side. With Mangonui right on him, he snapped up thediall but could not get a hick in. So he ran, dodging half a dozen opponents in as many yards. But Mangonui could not be discouraged. They came again and again, and finally,,though Edmonds managed to collar his man, ‘Cowie, a fair try was recorded. Flynn had a shot at the goal, but failed. Mangonui 3, Bay 0.

Bay tlion took a. hand at attacking and Mangonui had to force down. Back came Mangonui right on to Bay’s lino. The Bay forwards next took a. hand, to be stopped by -S. Nathan, who turned defence into attack. But the Bay forwards returned, and Dawson Mac Lean scored a tine try near the corner. Kicking directly into the wind, Duncan Mac Lean just failed to convert. —Mangonui 3, Bay 3. After a force-down by Mangonui early in the second spell, the scene of play quickly changed. Near the Bay line Donaldson passed to Flynn who, collared by Edmonds, passed to Cowie and a try was scored. Flynn’s kick failed. Mangonui f>, Bay 3. The Bay forwards were making ’a, better showing in the second spell, and the defenders began to hold their own. They had Mangonui on their line, and a score was registered, but in a. most unexpected manner. There was a. scramble on the line, “sacks on the mill,” the ball rolled a yard away, then from among the Mangonui players, who were all endeavouring to force down, a Bay arm reached out and touched the ball. Duncan Mac Lean had evened up the score. Though right in front of the posts, Edmonds failed with the kick. Maugonui (i, Bay 0. From a. free kick, 11. ITulme had a shot at goal, and brought the score to —Mangonui H, Bay 9. Just on call of time, with Mangonui on the attack, Whitefield dashed over. Flynn did not convert.
