A. H. PADGHAM
EEONT EANK GOLEEE. ENGLISH NO. I VLAYFJt. A. IT. Padgham, who won the “Dunlop” (onniament at Southport (Kuf>'hnul), is in the front rank among British professionals. He won the “News of the World” tournament in 1031 and the Irish open championship in 1032. He finished fourth in the British open
championship in 19,12 and fifth in Hhkk He was in the British Ryder
Cup team against the professionals of U.B.A. in 19:11 and 1011 Last year lie played Xo. .1 for Great Britain and was hcateu (I and 4 by Gene Sarazen. Badgham played truly phenomenal (pill to win the tournament this year as his scores show, and the runner-up, T. IT. Cotton (winner in 19.11 and I Odd I also made a remarkable effort to overtake* the Hying leader. The rounds of these players were; —
A. JL Radgliam 70 70 08 71 —270 T. 11, Cotton 7S 00 0!) OS —2SI
Cotton's start was disastrous, but in spite of it only extraordinarily fine poll’ on Padgham’s part prevented Cotton from winning. He overtook and passed all the rest of the* field. Colton won with the same seore (281) in TOdd but it was not good enough this year. Padgham’s seore is the lowest yet made in the event, and, aeeording to the eables, “the lowest ever returned for 72 holes in a major competition.” Well, Britain’s professionals obviously have “the goods’’ and it is to be hoped Padgham, or Cotton, or someone else will produce them when the British open championship comes round again next month. Since the British championship trophy went to America in .1924 it has remained there and It is time It was housed in British quarters again.
